Skating across a lake where people have worked and lived for centuries.

Falun lies in Dalarna, just like Orsa, on the northern shore of Runn - the large lake of this region. The town owes its name to the copper mining that took place there for centuries - hence the red mine buildings you see from the ice.

What you'll actually skate is never fixed in advance. Natural ice can't be planned: every morning we look again at the weather and ice quality, and adjust the route, the lake or the whole programme accordingly.

The set-up is the same as at Orsa: a guided group trip, small group, Joey out front.

Where you stay

Just like at Orsa, you stay in your own cabins close to the ice, so you gather in the evening and step straight outside in the morning.

How it works

You register in pairs, we arrange the rest.

Falun is an open-registration trip: you book a spot on a fixed departure date and skate together with the other participants. Sign-up is in pairs. If you come with your own group, you choose the date yourselves and we put the programme together with you.

Arrival

You arrive at the accommodation in Falun. Time to get your gear ready, get to know each other and take a first look at the ice. Joey talks the group through what the coming days may bring.

The first kilometres

A relaxed start on the swept track, so everyone gets used to the natural ice and the skates. Joey watches how the group is doing and adjusts the pace accordingly.

The days on the ice

Every morning we look at the weather and ice quality and decide where to go. Sometimes that's the long track across the lake, sometimes we head to other ice nearby. Along the way we stop for a break; with a fire, when it works out.

Departure

Depending on your travel time, there's often still room for one last lap around the ice in the morning before you leave.

The exact number of days depends on the departure date. Once that's fixed, the programme adjusts to match.

How good a skater do I need to be?

You don't have to be a competitive skater, but you do need to be able to skate independently and in control. We work with three paces: recreational, sporty and fanatic. If you're unsure about your level, Joey will think it through with you beforehand.

How many hours do we skate per day?

You decide that with the pace you choose: recreational is 1–4 hours a day, sporty 2–5 hours and fanatic 3–6 hours. See the three paces on the travel information page.

Is Falun suitable for a first skating trip to Sweden?

Falun is a guided group trip, and that guidance is exactly what helps if you still have little experience with Scandinavian natural ice. Joey comes along, reads the ice and decides where the day will come into its own best. Still, it remains natural ice: good preparation and following instructions are part of it.

What happens if the ice isn't good enough?

Natural ice can't be guaranteed. That's why we look again every morning at the weather and the ice quality, and adjust the route, the lake or the programme accordingly. Where necessary we move to another suitable lake or choose an alternative programme.

Which skates and clothing do I need?

You bring your own skating equipment and winter clothing. For natural ice we recommend touring skates; your clothing needs to be suitable for spending a whole day outdoors. Ice picks and a helmet are mandatory.

Can the programme change because of the weather?

Yes. The skating tours always depend on the weather and the quality of the ice. We look again every morning at the conditions and adjust the route, the lake or the programme accordingly. No day is completely fixed in advance.

Can I travel together with someone of a different level?

Give your level when you send in your request. Joey will then look at how this fits in best within the group.
