Skating across a lake where people have worked and lived for centuries.

Falun lies in Dalarna, just like Orsa, on the northern shore of Runn - the large lake of this region. The town owes its name to the copper mining that took place there for centuries - hence the red mine buildings you see from the ice.

What you'll actually skate is never fixed in advance. You skate independently, and natural ice can't be planned: the weather and the ice quality decide each day where you can skate.

You book Falun as a complete package: the flight, the rental car and the accommodation are arranged, and you choose when you go.

Falun is a package trip you put together yourself: you choose your arrival day and how long you stay, from 4 days. The flight, the rental car and the accommodation are included. If you'd rather arrange the flight or the transport yourself, you untick it and that amount comes off the price.

Every morning you look at the weather and ice quality and decide where to go. Sometimes that's the long track across the lake, sometimes you move to other ice nearby.

The exact number of days depends on the departure date. Once that's fixed, the programme adjusts to match.

Which lake do you skate on at Falun?

Falun lies on Runn, the large lake of Dalarna. Exactly where we skate is never fixed in advance: every morning we look at the weather and the ice quality, and move to other ice nearby if needed.

Is the skating trip to Falun guided?

Not as standard: Falun is a package trip you book yourself, without guidance on the ice. The flight, the rental car and the accommodation are included, along with online service beforehand. That does ask that you can judge for yourself whether the ice is safe. If you'd rather not go out on the ice on your own, you can book a guide to join you on the ice between 10 January and 20 February: €100 per day for 1 person, + €50 per day for each additional person, for as many days as you like. There are also guided group trips to Orsa and Falun, on a fixed date.

What is and isn't included in the trip to Falun?

Included are the flight to Sweden, the rental car on location, the accommodation in the cabins and online service beforehand. Not included are your own skating equipment and winter clothing, mandatory safety gear (ice picks and a helmet), food and drink, and insurance. If you'd rather arrange the flight or the rental car yourself, that amount comes off the price.

What does the skating trip to Falun cost?

The skating trip to Falun costs from €995 per person for 4 days. You choose when you go: in the calendar on this page you pick your arrival and departure days, between 18 December 2026 and 15 March 2027. You travel for at least 4 days, and the calendar shows which days are still available. At the start and end of the season the ice is at its most uncertain. You book and pay online straight away.

How good a skater do I need to be?

You don't have to be a competitive skater, but you do need to be able to skate independently and in control. If you're unsure about your level, Joey will think it through with you beforehand.

How many hours do you skate per day?

That's up to you: you skate independently and plan your days yourself. How much it adds up to also depends on the ice and the weather that day.

Is Falun suitable for a first skating trip to Sweden?

Falun is a good first taste of Scandinavian natural ice, precisely because the flight, the rental car and the accommodation are already arranged. As standard you skate independently, without guidance on the ice: that asks that you can judge for yourself whether the ice is safe. Between 10 January and 20 February you can add guidance on the ice. Still, it remains natural ice: good preparation is part of it.

What happens if the ice isn't good enough?

Natural ice can't be guaranteed. The weather and the ice quality decide each day where you can skate. Where necessary you move to another suitable lake nearby.

Which skates and clothing do I need?

You bring your own skating equipment and winter clothing. For natural ice we recommend touring skates; your clothing needs to be suitable for spending a whole day outdoors. Ice picks and a helmet are mandatory.

Can the programme change because of the weather?

Yes. The skating tours always depend on the weather and the quality of the ice. So look at the conditions again every day and adjust your route accordingly. No day is completely fixed in advance.
